19 billion euros a year: that's the estimated socio-economic cost of indoor air pollution. In response, the French Association of Companies for the Environment, of which Veolia is a member, has published a guide on the subject, which was made public on the occasion of a round table.

The indoor air quality (IAQ) of buildings must be considered from design to operation, and all stakeholders, including the occupants of the buildings, must contribute to it. It is necessary to reconcile energy savings and air quality in buildings: this is the real challenge to improve the IAQ.

Deputy Chief Innovation Officer, Veolia

On October 10, 2023, a round-table discussion brought together six experts for a publication on a growing concern: indoor air quality. The subject, which has become a public health issue over the last twenty years, concerns both public authorities and the private sector. In fact, the French association Entreprises pour l'Environnement (EpE) has made it an integral part of its agenda. Over the past few years, some forty major companies have joined forces within the Health-Environment Commission to understand and respond to the health, environmental and economic challenges of indoor air quality. The first result of this activity was the publication of a guide designed to identify best practices and areas for improvement. EpE drew on the experience of its members and the insights of experts and stakeholders to produce a dense and instructive content..

A snapshot of the time, this publication presents a progress report on the knowledge acquired and the work carried out. To testify, Sabine Fauquez, Deputy Innovation Director at Veolia, Armelle Langlois, Director of Sustainable Performance at Vinci, Corinne Lepage, Lawyer at Huglo Lepage Avocats, former Minister for the Environment, Marie Marchand-Pilard, Head of Health, Legal Affairs and Research and Innovation at EpE, Emmanuel Normant, Director of Sustainable Development at Saint-Gobain, and Fabien Squinazi, biologist and member of the HCSP, the OQAI and the SEIQA college, joined forces for a round table discussion.

The aim was to raise awareness of solutions that are already operational, and to explore the outlook for this societal challenge. Because the issue of climate change has also had an impact on the perception of indoor air quality: reducing emissions calls for better building insulation, and raises new questions in terms of ventilation. Companies are confronted with these issues both as producers and users of various substances in their activities, and as hosts to their employees or customers in their premises or vehicles.
